This industrial museum lies southwest of the city. You can’t really have a coal mining museum just above ground – which is why at the NCM you’ll be taken 140 metres underground by one of the experienced local miners. Deep in the tunnels of the former Caphouse Colliery, you’ll discover the underground workings, where models and machinery depict methods and conditions of mining from the early 1800s to present day. There’s plenty above ground, too, including the Hope Pit, pithead baths, Victorian steam winder, nature trail, new adventure playground and ponies. But you'll need to wear sensible footwear and warm clothing.
